Safety padlock guide

Padlock Selection Guide

A comprehensive guide to selecting the right safety padlock for your lockout/tagout (LOTO) program.

01 · OSHA requirements

OSHA standards for safety lockout devices

OSHA standards require lockout devices to meet the following criteria.

01

Identifiable

Lockout devices must be identifiable and indicate the identity of the employee applying the device.

02

Dedicated use

Lockout locks should be used only for controlling hazardous energy and not for other purposes.

03

Individual control

Personal lockout programs should clearly assign each employee their own padlock and key according to the employer's written procedure.

04

Device requirements

Lockout and tagout devices must be durable, standardized, substantial and identifiable.

02 · Choose for the environment

Match the padlock material to its use

Lockout is the foundation of LOTO. Select the padlock according to the work environment and the specific application.

01

Engineering plastic padlocks

Suitable for power systems, corrosive environments and a wide range of industrial applications.

02

Steel padlocks

Heavy-duty construction designed for environments where strong resistance to physical impact is required.

03

Aluminum padlocks

A lightweight option suited to frequent handling and applications such as the food industry.

04

Brass padlocks

A specialized option for certain industrial and flammable environments, subject to the site's hazard assessment.

03 · Key code registration

Help prevent duplicate key codes

To support the principle of one employee, one padlock and one key, Boviisky provides a key code registration service.

After registration, Boviisky will provide a User ID. When that User ID is used for future customized padlock orders, new key codes can be assigned to help avoid duplication with previously registered codes.

Select the right key system

Each key opens only one padlock.

KA

Master keyed

A master key can open multiple locks that are keyed differently. Master keys should be securely controlled according to the employer's written procedure.
